Stephen is remarkably clumsy. Falling over, spilling food and drink, running into people, unable to write clearly, constantly in trouble in school, his self-esteem is at an all-time low. And to make things worse, he is in year 6 and almost ready to go to the Comprehensive. It is Stephen himself who realises he needs help and goes to the headmaster to ask to be put into SEN. The Head takes his request seriously, and along with a new and very understanding teacher and an SEN advisor, he puts in motion the processes that will help Stephen help himself. The style is funny and approachable, and we learn about Stephen from himself, from his classmates, from his teachers, from his parents and sister - and even from the family dog! Dyspraxia is only mentioned once, when the SEN advisor explains to Stephen's parents that 'he shares many of the indicators of dyspraxia'. The practical help given is positive and to the point, and one of the interesting factors is that we begin to see that some of Stephen's traits are shared by his father. The characters really come alive in this story, and it will be of huge value to children with the kinds of problems Stephen has.
