What is a disability? A guide for children ISBN: 9781903699577
Published by Brittish Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), 2004
An excellent pamphlet explaining in easily-read terms just what disability means with emphasis on the fact that disabled people have different talents and abilities. There are specific stories about Michael, who uses a wheelchair because of his cerebral palsy, Kerry who has Down's sydrome, Nita who is blind, Sam who is deaf, and Jaydon who is autistic. Dyslexia, dwarfism, being very tall, major learning disabilities, asthma, diabetes, and heart defects are all also mentioned. 'But whatever a person can or can't do, however a person looks or acts, we are each of us special.' Photographs, mention of famous people with disabilities, and a good glossary add to the accessibility of the material. A good, positive introduction.
