Full of detailed information and with a pull-no-punches approach, this book will provide an honest assessment of cancer, its complexity, statistics, treatments and prognosis. An explanation of cells and why they change, including diagrams, a potted summary of cancer around the world and how it varies, detailed explanations of the most common cancers (lung, breast, bowel, leukaemia, melonoma and testicular) along with personal stories of sufferers, and information on diagnosis and treatments make up the bulk of the book. Chapters on prevention (lifestyle changes such as good diet, not smoking, and limiting alcohol) and, finally, on living with cancer make up the rest. This final chapter gives us two rather harrowing stories, first of a family with a mum with breast cancer - how they coped with her treatments - and then of a father with melonoma who ultimately died. These are honest and straightforward and the emphasis is on coping and discovering strengths. Something about the stages of bereavement is also given. The information is sophisticated and aimed at adults as well as older children. There is a list of helpful organizations as well as an index and glossary. Highly informative, as are all the books in this series.
