My friend has allergies ISBN: 9781844580972
Published by Chrysalis Children's Books (My Friend series), 2004
Paul is allergic to nuts, penicillin, pet dander, and pollen, and his friend Michael learns all about his allergies, what causes them and how he can help. The boys lead an active life, sharing swimming, football, reading, singing and playing guitar. They also meet Paul's cousin Jake, who has asthma. After a two page discussion on the body's reactions to allergens, including a diagram, we learn how Paul was tested for his allergies, about Jake's asthma and how he controls it, about the importance of keeping all nuts away from Paul and the necessity of having an EpiPen available at school as well as home. Paul's mum explains to Michael's mum about what to do if Paul should become ill while staying with Michael, and both families take full precautions. Even Michael's cat is outlawed during visits! There are two pages of 'Questions People Ask'; fact boxes, a glossary, an index, and a list of useful organisations make this an excellent tool for schools, as well as solid information for those diagnosed with allergies.
