David Lucas, a new author/illustrator, is one to watch. Highly imaginative and quirky, with busy, collage-style pictures, 'Halibut Jackson' is a joy! Halibut is shy, so shy that whenever he goes out - which isn't often - he wears a suit that makes him blend into the background, chameleon-like. He wears a suit covered in flowers when he goes to the park, and a book suit at the library. But when he receives an invitation from the Queen to a party, he doesn't know what to do. He decides if he dresses in gold and silver and sparkles, no one will see him because the palace is full of gold and silver. His suit is a triumph, BUT...the party turns out to be a garden party, and poor Halibut stands out like the proverbial sore thumb. Of course, everyone wants suits just like his, and he is soon doing a booming business as a taylor. He's still shy, though 'it seemed not to matter so very much at all'. An excellent parable about finding your talents to help overcome a personality problem, and it's great fun to find Halibut on each page. He blends in so well that one has to look carefully.
