In chalky line drawings in blue and black with the odd touch of red, the Foremans, father and son, have produced a memorable picture book. A lonely dog and a lonely little boy feel excluded and want desperately to have friends. Jack Foreman wrote the poem when he was nine and was being ostracised by former school friends, and the sadness is palpable in both text and pictures. There is a happy ending with both boy and dog being included in a gang of playing children, and the answer is simply to 'say hello'. Simply outstanding!
