Jack is definitely a problem. He is Nancy's little brother, and while she is tidy, he is anything but. He cuts her doll's hair because he thinks it will grow again; he pushes his pushchair into a pond; he tries to find Nancy's birthday presents. But worst of all, he almost ruins Nancy's party. He pulls down the balloons, pops the crackers, and squashes some of the cakes. Luckily, there is just time to put all to rights. 'The trouble with Jack,' said Nancy at bedtime, 'is that as he's my brother I've got to put up with him whatever he's like.' Nancy is a philosophic child.
