Nutmeg gets a little sister ISBN: 9781905664221
Published by British Association for Adoption and Fostering, 2007
This is one of a series of books from the BAAF about a little squirrel called Nutmeg. He and his birth sister Poppy and birth brother Hops live with their adoptive parents, Mummy Fern and Daddy Foxglove. When Mummy Fern hears that their birth mother has had another little squirrel, whom she again cannot look after properly, the siblings are anxious to adopt her too. After the usual procedures, Pip joins the family, and while Nutmeg and the other little squirrels are pleased, there are also questions to be answered and fraught times to get through. The emphasis in this story is how the siblings and their new half-sister get on, and how the family comes to terms with the ensuing problems. Never over-the-top, the book nevertheless addresses realistically emotions such as jealousy, anger, and resentment. There is also a useful scene with Pip's social worker and the Wise Owl judge who completes Pip's adoption. An extensive booklet, tucked into the back cover, gives practical guidance for parents, complete with examples of how different children have reacted to different families. There is also a guide to using the text with children. The bright pictures and clear text will appeal. Other books in the series are: Nutmeg gets adopted, Nutmeg gets cross, Nutmeg gets a letter, Nutmeg gets a little help, ande Nutmeg gets into trouble.
