Gemma refuses to eat anything. She throws her breakfast on the floor, squashes grapes the greengrocer gives her, and gives her dinner to the dog. Everyone is always saying 'Eat up, Gemma' to her, so one day when the family is in church and everyone is quiet, Gemma leans forward, says 'Eat up, Gemma', and tries to pull the fruit off a lady's hat. This gives her brother an idea. At home he turns a bowl over and arranges fruit round the edge to look like the hat, and sure enough, Gemma scoffs the lot. Everyone is pleased.
