The fact that John's family name is Midas is an immediate give-away. His greed for sweets and especially chocolates leads him to a peculiar sweet shop, where he is given a special chocolate, after which everything he eats turns to chocolate. At first this is fun. Chocolate toothpaste and chocolate breakfast are lovely. But thirst sets in and chocolate water is not thirst-quenching. Friends are lost, his beautiful trumpet turns into chocolate and, finally, even his mum when he kisses her. In true fairy-tale fashion, he rushes back to the shop and begs to be released from the spell. A nicely turned parable. Black and white illustrations and a short novel.
