Sid lives with his mum in their conventional if untidy house, and he has come to hate his father because he has moved out. He has become something of a loner, and he really does not want to visit his dad when the possibility arises. However, mum insists, and in spite of himself, he finds that he responds to his dad's alternative lifestyle. Dad is a hippy. He lives in a 'bender', a one room self-build hut, but there is a bed for Sid, milk from the goats and happy music from dad's alternative friends. Sid learns that he can accept both parents with their differences. It is apparent to readers why Sid's parents have split up. Unusual. Realistic, excellent pastel illustrations.
