Kegan is part of a massively dysfunctional family. Dad is a drunken bully, and mum, always tired, has no time for him. Kegan is mainly responsible for toddler brother, Gary - a responsibility he takes matter-of-factly, but seriously. Kegan's art teacher realises he has talent and wants to put him in for an art scholarship, but Kegan, whose self-esteem is at zero, doesn't want to bother. New girl, Zoe, is determined to befriend him, and they soon find they have much in common, particularly a love of foxes. Zoe's lifestyle is about as different from Kegan's as possible, and her mother is supportive and loving. When little Gary dies suddenly of Meningococcal Meningitis, Kegan finds some solace in rescuing a family of foxes that he and Zoe have discovered living in a scrap yard. Chapter 9 is particularly strong on Kegan's feelings right after Gary's death. Kegan is a believable, inarticulate loner of a young teenager, whose world is made up of his art and his friendship with Zoe. He wins his scholarship and he will ultimately be free of his family. There are signs that he and his mum may become closer. Gritty.
