Elfa, the little elephant, caries a shiny box on her back always, even when the day is hot and even when she would rather not. The reason is that Elfa's box is full of her memories, good ones, sad ones, happy ones, and bad ones, and she is very afraid she will lose it. None of the other animals seem at all interested in Elfa's box, so she hasn't been able to share the memories with anyone for a long time. When she meets Marvin, the wise monkey, he is delighted to share her memories, and they sit down together to do so. But then Elfa makes a sad discovery. Since she hasn't looked at her box for some time, she hasn't realised that some of the memories are missing. Marvin, a resourceful chap, helps her to fill in the missing bits, and Elfa is finally able to leave her box in a safe place and get on with her life. This gentle and understanding story is aimed at children who have been in care or been fostered or adopted and who, therefore, have a special need to keep their memories of people and places safe and secure, but it will also appeal to children in general as memories are important to us all.
