Badger is old and must 'go down the long tunnel'. He feels he is running down the tunnel and finally is free 'as if he had fallen out of his body'. His friends are sad, but each of them remembers something special he has taught them, and their memories are happy ones. The wind-in-the-willows type small animals and the delicate illustrations will be appealing to most children. A lovely story.
