A short novel about the sudden death of Steve's father in an accident at work. Steve, eleven, and Gemma, nine, and their mum must come to terms with their very different reactions to the news. While the novel isn't long enough for emotions to be gone into in depth, it manages to cover a range of feelings. Other people help Steve, and the possibility of having a kitten helps too. Black and white illustrations are not very useful, and in one case, misleading. Good description of the funeral, but overall, the story is curiously flat. Assess carefully before use.
