When Felipa's grandmother, Abuelita, dies, she is very sad because she can no longer talk to her. Her parents explain that Abuelita's soul will live on forever, but this puzzles the little girl: where is this soul? One explanation is that souls live in the mountain, so Felipa sets out to go there. But it is too far and she gets lost. Her father finds her and explains that she can't visit her grandmother's soul, but that every year there is a celebration for all the souls in November, and this becomes something for Felipa to look forward to. The Day of the Dead arrives, and Felipa joins in the music and decorating of graves and the special food, and once again feels close to Abuelita. The illustrations of this story are remarkable. Full of the colours of South America, the naive style and chalky textures are very beautiful. They bring to life joyously this culture so different from our own.
