Narnia's 'last battle' is also the children's last battle. A train accident has plunged them into Narnia, where they help fight a tremendous battle between the powers of good and evil, and it is only at the end that Aslan tells them they are 'dead' in Shadowlands, as he calls our world, and they will stay in 'Narnia within Narnia'. The symbolism is Christian, but the concepts would be acceptable to any family with a belief in an after-life. A strong and powerful story. Full of hope, and first-rate for reading together.
