Grandad, I'll always remember you ISBN: 9780237517557

Tom arrives home from school one day to find everyone looking very sad. His grandfather has died suddenly. Grandma explains what happened, that grandad was very tired and went to rest on the settee where she found him later. Tom tries to understand what death is, but the family explanations don't help much. There is no concept of heaven in this story, but Tom comes to realise that grandpa doesn't know what has happened to him. He thinks that if he tells grandad that he is dead, but that he won't feel anything, this will be reassuring. So he writes a letter explaining to grandad what has happened, and in a dream he sees his grandad for one last time and gives him the letter. This provides reassurance for Tom, and he is happier afterwards. Warm family relationships also help Tom's adjustment. Excellent illustrations, including collage and torn paper borders.
