Katie has been very close to her gran ever since her mum married gran's son when Katie was only three. Gran has left a special letter with her solicitors for Katie to have when she dies, and Katie is so pleased that she begins to write letters back. It seems in Katie's mind that gran answers these letters, and so a special correspondence begins. As time goes on, Uncle Edwin, gran's brother, must move in with them because there is nowhere else for him to go. Resenting this, Katie becomes angry with gran for dying. A beautiful bequest from gran, an antique ink stand, convinces Katie that gran wants the correspondence to continue, but it gets harder as time goes on, particularly as Katie comes to believe that gran is still somehow with them. Christmas looks like being a disaster, but Uncle Edwin saves the day by taking Katie to buy a Christmas tree. Katie learns that the best way to remember gran is by loving Uncle Edwin. The story runs the gamut of emotions, and clearly depicts the long and painful adjustment to the death of someone close. Short, but warm and full of humour as well as understanding.
