Being Me : Poems About Thoughts, Worries and Feelings ISBN: 9781913074654
Published by Otter-Barry Books Ltd, 2021
This book of poetry is just what it says it is - poems about thoughts, worries and feelings, and as such will be a wonderfully apt book for classrooms. Children these days have the kinds of worries and concerns that they may try to push aside, but these poems will help them grow and become themselves. Some of the poems are quite specific about things like absent parents, bullying, racism, sadness, OCD, anger or feeling different. Then there are general ones too, sometimes happy ones that give hope, but some that recognise the unkindness of others. Written by three established poets, they are accompanied by black and white line drawings reflective of the poem itself - some of these quite sophisticated. In fact, the poems and their illustrations will appeal to a wide range of ages from 9 or 10 to secondary level. A wonderful anthology that will help children understand their stronger feelings and fears and how to cope, or not. Honest and truthful. Two pages of organisations that can help and some hints on using the book are given at the back. Excellent.
