The Cookie : A story of friendship and food allergy ISBN: 9781838423605

Written by an author with a child suffering from peanut allergy, this story will be useful for serious allergies of all kinds and gives lots of good information about them. Two pages of advice to parents, carers and teachers will be very valuable. Best friends, Laurie and Lewis, have known each other since they were babies. An interracial friendship, it is important to them both. They enjoy different things, and sometimes their mums have to tell them to share if things become fraught while playing, but most of all, they love being together. While at school one day, Laurie has forgotten his snack and Lewis offers to share half of his cookie. Suddenly, Laurie becomes very ill and must be taken to hospital quickly. Lewis is horrified and wonders why sharing can be wrong. When Laurie comes back to school, he is put in front of the class to explain just what happened, and the other children are so interested in what he has to say that he quickly makes new friends. Lewis feels left out and so makes another friend too, Harry, who then has a birthday party and doesn't invite Laurie because of his allergy; he also teases him at school, and Lewis doesn't think this is funny. When he tells his parents about his problem, his dad comes up with the answer: they bake cookies that are completely free from any peanuts or ingredients that could cause a problem and take them to Laurie's house. There is a happy reconciliation, and at Lewis's next birthday party, his parents ensure that everything to eat is nut-free and able to be enjoyed by the whole class, including Laurie. A great story with lots of detail and wonderful pictures to enjoy.
