This lovely picture book is told from the viewpoint of younger sister, Faizah, who is concerned about big sister, Asiya, who is wearing her beautiful blue hijab for the first day at secondary school. Faizah knows that their mother has explained all about hijab, and that other children may not feel or understand the importance and the pride of wearing it, even that some racial comments may be made. This worries her, and she feels so close to Asiya that she wants to be sure she is okay. Luckily, the primary school and the secondary are on the same grounds, and Faizah can see her sister from time to time. When she gets near enough, she witnesses a boy making fun of the hijab and calling it a 'tablecloth' and laughing about it. This concerns Faizah, but when she asks Asiya how she is, Asiya replies she is fine and strong. Faizah is incensed and angry, as are Asiya's friends, but she herself is calm and composed: 'Asiya's hijab isn't a laugh. Asiyas hijab is like the ocean waving to the sky. It's always there, strong and friendly.' In her class, Faizah draws a picture of herself and Asiya, both grown up, having a picnic, and wearing their beautiful blue hijabs; the teacher and one of her friends like the picture very much. Faizah can hardly wait to show it to Asiya and their mother because it shows that the two sisters will always be great friends and support each other. Mama says, 'Don't carry around the hurtful words that others say. Drop them. They are not yours to keep. They belong only to those who said them.' This is a beautiful story in both text and illustration and has the elegance and truth of common sense and family love and support. It also shows support from friends who have no problem with hijab. Excellent.
