What Feelings Do When No One's Looking ISBN: 9781782693598
Published by Pushkin Children's Books, 2022
This really splendid picture book about all sorts of feelings, twenty-nine in all, is long and detailed with the most delightful illustrations in shades of blacks and greys with some bits of soft colour. Small, furry creatures inhabit these pages, all of whom represent a single feeling and what it does 'when no one's looking'. For instance, 'Anxiety lies in a rusty can in a dark corner under the wardrobe', and 'Fear pretends it's not there'. 'Kindness calms storms' and 'Patience has a beautiful garden'. Positive and negative feelings abound, and most are given full-page spreads with very white backgrounds, helping the feeling to stand out. Wholly imaginative and very unusual, this is a remarkable approach to learning about what is going on inside us, and while it is a useful learning tool for children, it is also very approachable for everyone, including adults. The author and illustrator are both Polish, and the book is in the process of being published in twenty-five different languages. It could and should become a classic. I loved it!
