Frida has developed lots and lots of anxieties, and each time a new one appears, she collects a pebble to put in her pocket. She worries about little things and big: should she wear both her sun hat and her wellies today, is everything in her school bag that she needs (she checks three times), she's frightened of the swimming pool even though she is a good swimmer, and the peas on her plate have a frightening habit of flying around onto the table. The pebbles in her pocket are heavy, and 'some days her worries became the only thing she can think about'. Her understanding Granny who always comes on Sundays to visit, is the highlight of her week, and this time they are to make strawberry jam. Once they've finished the many pots of jam, Granny brings out a large, empty jar and makes a suggestion: Why not put all the pebbles in the jar and close them away with the lid? Frida isn't sure this will work, but she decides to try and together they fill the jar, except for one shiny black pebble that is Frida's favourite. Soon, though, she is following Granny's lead and doing some of the things she has worried about before, such as wearing her sunhat and leaving the wellies at home, going down the slide even though it is very slippery, and jumping into the swimming pool and 'swimming like a fish'. When Frida is able to put the last pebble into the jar, we know her fears have been conquered. The illustrations, full of soft colours and fuzzy edges are endearing and optimistic and fill the book with sunshine. Lovely.
