Dilly is a cheerful little penguin, and her parents find her perfect from the first moment she hatches and love her very much. But there is something different about Dilly. She only has one leg. With her one leg she can hop and jump and twirl round very fast. The other baby penguins think this is great and spend lots of time trying to copy her, although they aren't as good as Dilly at her tricks. Some things she can't do, like waddle, as all good penguins should, and the other penguin parents begin to feel cross because she is so different. 'She is 'teaching our babies odd things', they say. Cheerful Dilly is very sad at this and stops doing her tricks, but she can't keep up with the others. When two of her friends try to help her go up a hill, the three of them fall into a snow hole and must call for help. Their parents can't see them, and it is only when Dilly jumps high up on her one strong leg that a mummy penguin knows where they are. All is well, and the penguins learn that being different can be a good thing and is to be encouraged. The illustrations show us a wonderful bunch of penguins all exactly alike in what they do - and then learning to do things differently. The greys and blues of the sea and landscapes, as well as the black and white of the penguins, are beautifully done, and this is a charming book to love and learn from.
