Hey You! : An empowering celebration of growing up Black ISBN: 9780241521946
Published by Penguin Random House Children's UK, 2021
This collaborative picture book, written and illustrated by Dapo Adeola and 18 other well-known black illustrators, is a paean of praise for all the black people in the world who have every right to a good life doing the things they are best suited for. Produced after the death of George Floyd in 2020, the story is told as by parents of a baby who want to explain to their child about racism and how he or she must not let this hold them back. Each of the illustrators has a double-paged spread, and while they are all different, the fact that they are working together shines through in every detail. The text talks about the beauty of black skin, the fact that there have always been black people who have done great things, the family love they share, that they are wonderful just as they are, and many many move positive attributes that each child has. They will have choices, they must be curious, and - always - they must have freedom to be themselves. There will be pain and sadness, but also joy and love and laughter, and as black people they must work together to fight injustice. Deeply felt and movingly told, this story should be in every classroom. Most unusual and unique in its approach.
