The Reason I Jump: one boy's voice from the silence of autism ISBN: 9781444776775
Published by Hodder & Stoughton, 2014
This remarkable story, written by a 13 year old Japanese lad with a sharp as steel mind inside a body that refuses to cooperate in anything except using a computer with an alphabet grid, both of which have given him communication with the world in an extraordinary way. The format is a series of 58 questions that people often want to ask about him and why he behaves the way he does: Why do you ask the same questions over and over? Why do you ignore us when we are talking to you? Why are you so picky over what you eat? His answers are lucid and entirely believable and give an insight into what may well be happening in other autistic peoples' minds. With a very supportive Mum and a lot of determination, Naoki has given us an understanding and a vision of his life that is far from our usual perceptions of the autistic. He is an author, a good one, and make no mistake. The unusual and very beautiful short story at the end of the book is another proof of how important communication is in our lives and that we must learn to communicate with those who find it hard, as well as those who find it all too easy and therefore value it less. Moving and exceptional, and should be read by everyone, no matter what age.
