This marvelous picture/information book will be useful in schools and families to explain all the many world-wide diversities that the word 'family' can contain. We begin with a double-page spread of small pictures of some twenty-two different sorts of families, and we go on from there to explain the shapes and sizes, the different components (grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, etc), the special words that explain relationships within a family (such as single parent, adopted, married, fostered, stepfamilies etc), how families can change, what kinds of homes there are, different kinds of foods that families like, how they help each other, what different families may like to do with each other, and important celebrations. Feelings and emotions come into it too, and there is an excellent section on making family trees. The pictures are wonderful and evocative and the explanations full but simple and very straightforward. There is a good glossary and a thorough index. Altogether a very informative and beautifully produced book.
