Little white dragon Maurice is different from the other dragons. He is 'small, gentle and quiet' and he loves flowers and flower arranging better than anything else. His older brother, Gruff couldn't be more different; he is 'large, rough and loud, as dragons are expected to be. He and his friends have a competition each year to see who is the strongest, and Gruff usually wins. This year, Maurice is old enough to join in, but he doesn't want to burn any flowers, so doesn't really try in the blowing-fire competition. He's not good at being scary either and twines flowers around his horns. The other dragons are dismissive of his attempts, and he sadly realises he will never be like the others. When it begins to rain, Gruff decides the next stage of the competition, a treasure hunt, should continue in spite of the storm, and even the other dragons are not happy about this. But off Gruff flies, right in to the storm clouds. When he doesn't return, the others don't know what to do, but little Maurice has a plan. He suggests they fly up too, in a mouth-to-tail daisy chain formation so they don't get lost, and look for Gruff. They find him quite quickly, but he has a hurt wing and can't fly home. It is Maurice again who finds the answer, and with his floristry talents, he weaves a willow harness so that two of the big dragons can carry Gruff home. They arrive home to a heroes welcome, and Maurice is lauded and praised for his quick action. A chastened Gruff must admit that Maurice is strong in the most important thing - being true to himself: 'Maurice thinks about the delicate flowers that grow among rocks, quietly and boldly breaking through, and at last he realises that he has always been strong.' A charming and gentle story about someone who is different and is able to discover that his differences are actually strengths.
