Herbert is a rabbit, but he believes himself to be a fox. He is so convinced that he makes himself fox ears and a tail and paints himself with blobs of red paint, and he and his little sister cause so much chaos and mess by their fox games that Mum gets quite cross: 'Promise me you will be a good rabbit!' she says sternly. One day, Herbert goes to the park in his fox costume and plays with the other foxes, and Mum calls him back to the house: 'I don't understand...Why are you dressed like that when I asked you to be a good rabbit?' 'because...I AM A FOX!' he shouts. Mum finally understands his need to be treated as a fox, and there is forgiveness all round. Often funny with Herbert and his sister causing so much chaos with their games that one can fully understand Mum's anger, it also shows a mum who wants the best for her unusual child and is able to accept him as he is.
