Daria's Grandpa is in hospital, and while his window actually looks out onto dull, gray buildings, Daria paints picture for him to paste on the window so that he can see the sea and the beach, and all the people playing on it. She loves her Grandpa dearly, and each time she visits, she brings a new picture for the window of things she and Grandpa enjoy doing together, flying kites, or making sand castles, or a rainbow. They have a sort of mantra that Daria says on each visit: 'We'll fly kites when you get better. Right, Grandpa'? And Grandpa says, 'Of course we will.' But gradually, Grandpa gets worse, first, not being able to get out of bed. Then he must wear an oxygen mask. When he can no longer speak, he can squeeze Daria's hand 'not very tight, but tight enough', and she knows this means he loves her. It is a very sad day for Daria and her parents when Granpa dies and Daria must be told. A beautiful two page spread shows Daria and her mum and dad sharing the news with tears and hugs, and another with Daria crying in bed that night. She goes with dad to collect Grandpa's things, and takes the pictures from the window. There is the funeral to go to, and Daria says goodbye touching the coffin, sad but accepting. The pictures now go on Daria's window, and she sees the sea along with all her happy memories of Grandpa. A beautiful and moving book about a little girl and her beloved Grandpa, who will never be forgotten. There is a page of advice for parents about using the book, written by a psychotherapist. Very special.
