Phyllis & Grace ISBN: 9781912650514

This poignant picture book, full of soft, expressive watercolour and pen and ink drawings, is exceptionally well written, particularly because it is clear from the beginning that Phyllis's dementia is reaching a critical stage. Next door to her live Grace and her parents who are very thoughtful neighbours. They often send Grace with a dish of something special for Phyllis or do the odd helpful thing around her house. While Phyllis doesn't remember Grace's name, she sometimes remembers her own family from long ago and tells Grace these stories, forgetting some necessary point. Her children are 'playing upstairs' or she's 'waiting for her husband to come home'. Often in children's books about dementia it is a grandparent suffering, but one of the great strengths of this story is that Grace has no family connection with Phyllis and comes out of interest and friendship; she accepts Phyllis just as she is. Their friendship is a deep one, and at the very end, when Phyllis is in a care home, she recognises Grace and calls her by name. A deeply moving story with memorable illustrations that really bring home what life is like for those with dementia.
