All About Dyspraxia : understanding developmental coordination disorder. ISBN: 9781787758353

Dyspraxia, also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), is rarely mentioned in children's books, but this one can be enjoyed by anyone. Each page shows a photograph of animals, doing something funny or endearing or unusual, and with the photo, we have a few sentences explaining some aspect of Dyspraxia. The photos are remarkable and fit the text beautifully. For instance, a picture of a young raccoon, hanging from a branch and looking decidedly awkward and unsure of what is happening is accompanied by: 'The first signs can appear quite early, with little ones being extra wobbly and late to walk.' Many problems Dyspraxics may face are explained, and with them are some of the ways that others can help, including professional advice when necessary. Even younger children than six will enjoy the pictures enormously, but I have given the age level as six because the text is more complex. Pluses mentioned are the fact that Dyspraxics are often witty, have great empathy, are inquisitive, can solve problems in unusual ways, and can be highly creative; they can also be determined and persistent if given understanding care when young: '...with their clever minds, their strong work ethic and their inventive ways of adapting, their futures look bright.' A lovely picture book that will be loved and encouraged by all who read it; also, beautifully produced. Available from Amazon, from book shops, and from the publisher: www.jkp.com.
