The Divorce Journal for Kids ISBN: 9781787757066
Atkins, Sue and Bradley, Amy
Published by JESSICA KINGSLEY, 2021
This book is not one to get from the library. It must be bought and used by each individual because there are lots of things to draw, to write down, to fill in, as well as places for pasting pictures. It truly is a journal, and should go a long way in helping children cope with the stresses of divorce or separation. It makes the point that older children may not want to show it to anyone, but it can also be used with parents, a teacher, or a therapist, and there are lengthy suggestions at the end of the book for each of those categories. There is also an excellent list of other useful books. The journal is intended to be your next 'best friend' and so it should be. There are general sections on exploring your feelings, expressing them, particularly anger, getting them out of your head and learning to cope with them. There is also lots about learning about yourself and 'what makes you feel special loveable and wonderful.' The exercises are do-able, practical and seem to be things kids might quite enjoy doing. There is lots of writing, drawing, suggestions of people who can help, and there is a great deal of honesty about how difficult this situation is for everyone concerned, but that it is never the child's fault. Inevitably there is some repetition, but that is because the facts need to be reinforced. This is a super book for helping children explore their own feelings about their parents and the 'new' family they find themselves in.
