The little girl in this story and her mum are very close and loving, and she understands that some days they must go to the food bank because there is no money in their carefully counted out coins for food. She also knows there are things they can do that don't involve money, like going to the library, or practicing singing, or going to try on clothes at the charity shop, but this is not one of those days. Instead, they must go to the Food Bank. Mum doesn't like doing this, but the little girl does because there are biscuits and squash to enjoy there. Mum is a bit cross when the little girl asks for her favourite cereal, because they must take only the things that 'kind people' give them. But the helping ladies understand. On the way home, they play one of their imaginative games - 'maybe-on-day' - about all the special things they will have when there is money enough. Mum dreams of washing machines and nice clothes, whereas the little girls wishes are for a kitten and lots of cake! They are a happy duo in spite of Mum's worries, and they end their day by eating a good meal and having full tummies 'because of kind people'. The illustrations, in muted colours, show us how this situation affects the young family, and we see Mum's determination to give her young daughter the best childhood possible. A superb picture book about a difficult subject to explain to the youngest children.
