Geraldine is a feisty second grader (this is an American story) and she and her friends are fully fed up with Jimmy, who is a terrible bully. He makes fun of shyer children and pushes everyone around. The class must make him stop, and Geraldine, who likes to invent things, comes up with an interesting idea. She and three friends get together all the equipment they need and make a shield with the help of her Dad - a wooden shield with a handle on the back, mirrors on the front, and a hidden old mobile phone. With this they confront Jimmy as a group and make him see himself in the mirrors while hearing himself on recorded messages when he tries his usual bullying. His own angry face and voice confront him, and this does the trick; he begins to cry. We are told that Geraldine's Dad has had a talk with the teacher about the bullying too, and she is now fully aware and takes Jimmy off for a chat. The really interesting thing about this story is that the children find the answer for themselves and it becomes a team effort. Good comic-style illustrations make up the whole. The point is made at the end of the book that a bully may have his/her own problems to deal with and that must be understood 'even when it is difficult.'
