The little girl’s Nana is a born ecologist, and this stunningly beautiful picture book shows how Nana has made her garden into a paradise for all wild things. She knows the importance of having plenty for the birds and bees to eat and wild places for all creatures to hide and be at home, and her wild flowers bloom profusely and all higgledy-piggledy. The little girl and her mum love to join Nana in her garden and hear and see all the lovely things there, and as time goes on and Nana begins to fade as the year becomes autumn and then winter, the time comes for Nana’s chair in the garden to be empty, and the little girl and her mum are sad. There is newness, though, as spring arrives, and with it a new baby sister and the beginnings of the garden waking again. As the little girl and her mum begin to help the garden back to life, they remember Nana: ‘We think of Nana in the trees, we sing her song to the bumblebees.’ In lyrical poems and the most gloriously riotous pictures of the garden, we see life at its happiest and best, and the grey and white illustrations of winter show us sadness as part of any life.
