When children have a parent with Bipolar disorder, they can often feel anxious and unhappy, not knowing how to cope or what to do. This picture book is the perfect antidote. In colourful, comic-style illustrations, we meet a small girl and her Mum and learn about the problems and the kind of help that can be needed. Supported by the Welcome Trust, it provides real information in a form easily read and enjoyed, while at the same time giving reassurance. Mum is sometimes full of fun and joy, and at other times finds it difficult to get out of bed. She’s great at reading stories and cooking with her daughter, but can be embarrassing when talking too loud in the library or jumping into the swimming pool. When Mum has to go away ‘somewhere quiet’ to get the help she needs, it is often Granddad who comes to look after the little girl, and he is very good about explaining what happens to Mum and why she is as she is. They both remember the good times when she is her ordinary self, and they agree that they love her just as she is. There is a family therapist too, who helps, and a social worker. The little girl has phone numbers on her mobile – people she can phone if she needs help or to talk. It is Granddad who comes up with the idea that Mum’s life is like a roller coaster – always up and down – and the little girl knows: ‘…she is MY Mum, and I wouldn’t have her any other way.’ Two pages at the back tell us about Bipolar and exactly what it means and some suggestions about how to cope. This is an excellent story with the possibility of real help to those concerned.
