Arthur starts out his day by stomping and huffing and roaring, and it doesn't get any better, so he decides the only answer is to run away - which he does 'very nearly to the end of the garden'. He seems to have been gone a long time, and lying down in the grass, he begins to wonder if his parents and sister are missing him. But when he gets up to go home, he discovers a very dark forest has grown up in front of him, and this he must go through. He doesn't get very far when he comes upon a Bear, a bear who is angry and stomping about, so Arthur joins him and together they stomp out their anger until they find themselves dancing. Surprised at this happy outcome, they dance happily together through the woods. A small pink Elephant then appears, and he is huffing away in anger too. Arthur and he huff and puff together until they find themselves 'hooting and tooting' instead, making wonderful music. Bear and Arthur and Elephant then proceed joyously dancing and tooting together until they meet a Lion who is roaring. Oh dear, but soon Arthur roars with him until they both find themselves singing - a much more pleasant occupation. Arthur and all three animals proceed through the woods dancing and singing and tooting until they reach Arthur's back door. Will his parents be cross. No, indeed. In fact, it is 'almost as if he had never been gone'. Was it a dream that Arthur had? It seems likely, but whatever it was, it was a wonderful adventure full of marvelous pictures and lots of noise and pleasure. In a slight nod to 'Where the Wild Things Are', we meet a young boy who is learning to control his temper in the best possible way. Super fun!
