Three friends live in a place that does not feel friendly. ‘People found them a little too colourful or a little too strange or a little too shy.’ These three are Moon Lady (with a large round white face) Trunky (an elephant) and Little Lion, and they have become very tired of living somewhere that doesn’t feel like home. So, off they go on a boat. They find an island that looks friendly from afar, and Moon Lady, always the optimist, thinks they will be happy there. Much to their sorrow, they find it even worse than the place they left. There is an ‘angry little man’ who demands to know who they are and why they aren’t green like everyone else on the island. When they are put in the zoo, along with lots of very unhappy green-painted animals, they are truly sorrowful. Moon Lady sings a lullaby that puts everyone to sleep, and the keys to the cages are taken so that all the animals escape. The islanders pursue them, but the animals all make it to the boat and get away. Unfortunately, a big storm comes up, and the islanders are under threat of drowning, so Moon Lady convinces them all that they must go to the rescue, which they do, and the boat, now exceedingly full of people and animals sails away to yet another island. The rain washes off the paint from all the boats’ inhabitants, and at the new island they decide that differences are much the best way of living and proceed to make life as colourful as possible, except, of course the angry little man: ‘But nobody took much notice of him any more.’ The illustrations that contain collage interjections of real faces and bodies as well as lots of wonderfully strange paintings are unique and special, and we know that the three friends have found their home at last.
