When Lubna and her father go across the sea in a boat, Lubna picks up a flat, smooth stone from the beach. She carries it with her on the long journey, and when they land in a refugee camp, ‘a world full of tents’, she draws a smiley face on the stone and tells it all her troubles. She is missing her brothers and her home, but there is war there, and she knows her father will keep her safe. After awhile, Amir appears at the camp too. They play together and Lubna introduces Amir to her ‘best friend’ the pebble. Amir thinks it’s lovely too. When dad announces that he and Lubna have found a new home and will be leaving the camp, she is at first happy and then sad because of leaving Amir behind. He is sad too, and Lubna doesn’t know what to do. She makes the right decision and gives Pebble to Amir, who wants to know what to do when he is sad and misses her. ‘Tell Pebble all about it,’ she explains. This moving exchange between two refugee children in that most difficult of all circumstances proves that loving relationships survive even the worst of times. The beautiful if sombre illustrations reflect the text wonderfully. A beautiful book.
