Dealing with My Stepfamily ISBN: 9781445157962
Published by Franklin Watts, 2019
One of a series of information books for young children (Key Stage 1) with stories of individuals having problems and giving advice on how to cope. This book about step families, tells us of seven children who are finding life difficult in new families, each with a different reason. One wants his own dad to himself; another thinks his stepfather wants to replace his real dad and becomes rude and difficult; Riley believes her new stepmother will leave the family, like the last one did; Elliot thinks his mum is nicer to the stepchildren than to him; another problem is sharing a room with an older step-sibling, and then there is a boy who resents rules that his new step-mum has put in place. The last child is Kyle, who is concerned because he finds he likes his new stepfather rather better than his real dad. All of these children express their worries and are helped by talking about the problem with their stepparents. Solutions are found and everyone is happier. The bright, simple illustrations and clear text add much to the whole, and at the end of the book, a short glossary, some helpful web sites, a brief index and notes for adults using the book will be useful. There is a play-script for use in schools too. A nicely produced, practical book for both school and home.
