Joe is playing pirates in the park. There are sharks and crocodiles in the water, but Joe bravely faces them all - until a little girl comes along: 'You've only got one leg!' 'Yup', says Joe. Then there are more questions and more children coming on the scene. They are all very interested in Joe's lack of leg, but he refuses to answer their questions. Instead, he fields them with a question back: 'What do you think happened?' 'Did it fall off?' 'Was it a burgler?' 'Was it a lion?' 'NO', shouts Joe, suddenly fed up. When he goes back to his pirate game, the children become interested and join in, and soon they are all playing happily together, and it is apparent that Joe isn't hampered at all about the lack of a leg. As they sit and have a snack together, Joe asks the little girl who first asked the question, 'Do you still need to know what happened?' 'NO', says Simone, and that is that. A wonderfully humorous book that makes the point with great panache that it is not good to ask people about their disabilities. The illustrations are full of expressive faces and the reactions of a young lad who has had enough of people he doesn't know prying. Great for learning about disabilities in general and not just the specific one of a missing limb. Joe is a great role model! There is a page at the back of the book written by the author, who has also lost a leg, with some specific advice about handling children who are being over-inquisitive. A great book for schools and home.
