No Longer Alone is a lovely picture book about a family getting over the loss of their mother. The three girls are grieving, but the youngest of them has begun to be very quiet and withdrawn. Her aunt says she's 'shy'; the teacher says she's 'very quiet'; Nan says 'she doesn't like to run about'. But the little girl knows this is all wrong. When she is by herself, she talks and screams and shouts and runs about and experiences all the sadness and grief she feels inside. It is only when Dad begins to talk to her and to really listen to all she says, that she pours out all her feelings: 'I tell him all the things that are worrying me, upsetting me, making me feel alone. And he listens...like the sun listens to leaves, like the ocean listens to raindrops...' Lyrically beautiful in text, and equally so in illustration, this story will provide comfort and understanding of the peculiar world we enter when someone important leaves it. Superb in every way.
