The little black girl loves school, she tells her pet tiger over and over, until we begin to realise that there is a problem. Some days she is sad and wants to stay at home ,but other days all is well, and she can play with friends and climb the climbing frame ‘almost to the top’. The problem is Molly who stares at her and blocks her way and laughs at her stories ‘but not in a good way’. She also steals her food and is remarkably unpleasant. In telling her tiger, who always seems to be with her, even at school, she suddenly realises that he is strong and that she can be strong too. So, the next day tiger and girl march to school in a determined way, and she finds her voice: ‘It’s not okay to be mean. To make faces. To hold on too tight. To say words that hurt.’ ‘Today I found my voice. You showed that it was hiding inside of me all the time.’ One knows that Nadiya Hussain found her voice very well in the Great British Bake Off, and we suspect that the little girl’s experiences in this story reflect on her life in early childhood. She has certainly come through bullying with flying colours! The big cuddly tiger, and the little black girl in glasses have come along way.
