One day Taylor decides to build something amazing with his blocks. He works and works, and the finished product is indeed amazing – until a flock of black birds comes along and knocks the whole thing down. Taylor is bereft and terribly sad, but the animals who come along to commiserate don’t help at all. Each one has the answer: The chicken says they should talk about it; the bear says to get angry; the elephant says they should build it again, and so it goes. Each animal has the answer, but none of them listens to how Taylor feels until the rabbit comes along. He comes quietly, snuggling up to Taylor and waiting, and Taylor begins to talk. He talks about all the feelings the other animals have suggested, his anger, his desire to throw the blocks away, his wanting to ruin things for others, and, finally, when he is ready and able, he decides to rebuild his wonderful, amazing tower. The empathy in this story is palpable and the lovely relationship between sensitive rabbit and the hurt little boy is so important. Listening is an art, an art we should all develop. Sometimes empathy, the kind the animals tried to use, isn’t enough and through all of life’s problems, the answer so often is just to listen to what the hurting person has to say for themselves. Gentle, expressive pictures help along the story beautifully.
