Sami has moved to a new country, and as he is shy, he hasn’t been able to make friends. Some people frighten him, such as the lady on the bus who always seems to look cross, and the baker who can’t understand what his mum says. Then there’s the little red-haired girl at school who laughs when he can’t say anything but his name. Sami is doing his best to stay happy while by himself. He’s teaching himself to juggle, and he likes being with his mum and baby sister. But when a little bird sees him playing alone in the park, she flies down and bumps into him on purpose. This is a bird who knows exactly what she is doing and when she asks Sami to help her find her friends, he is happy to oblige. Off they go, first to see the old lady on the bus who happily gives Sami some seeds to feed the birds; next they meet the baker who gives Sami a bun to feed the ducks – friendly both of them. And when Sami finds the little birds friends for her, she is delighted. Now alone with little bird gone, Sami is worried when he sees the red-headed girl, but she, also, is friendly, and when she kicks her ball to him and asks him if he wants to play, he is more than pleased. Off they go together, and little bird has solved another problem for a lonely child. The illustrations in this beautiful picture book by new author/illustrator, Devon Holzwarth, have a jungley and exotic feel to them, which is hardly surprising, as she grew up in Panama. A new talent to watch!
