Alfie Braithwaite really is a little horror! He is always in trouble, and with good reason because if someone has exploded the microwave or turned the cat a different colour, it has to be Alfie. And Alfie knows he has done all these terrible things, but always blames them on Dave. Dave is a gremlin, a purple and green gremlin ‘with an enormous wart on his bottom’, but this is only in Alfie’s imagination, so there can’t really be a Dave, can there? But one Monday morning Dave actually appears and if Alfie has been a horror, Dave is even more so. Who else would put red socks into the washing machine with sister Daisy’s white ballet dress? Who else would shove jammy biscuit crumbs down the slot in the DVD player? Of course, no one in the family believes (or can see) Dave, so this puts Alfie in a quandary. What to do? Perhaps stop the lying for a start, but how does one get rid of Dave? An enquiry on the Internet turns up to suggestion that cold water poured on him will do the trick, so Alfie gets out his Special Super Soaking Water Shooter and finally disintegrates Dave while ruining other things in the process. The family is angry and suppose Alfie is going to try to blame Dave again, but he doesn’t. He admits he had done it, but that this was the last time. ‘And do you know what? It almost was.’ A fun easy reader with lots of fun, colourful pictures, this will appeal and might just convince the most dedicated liar that lying is not a good idea.
