This picture book could be used just as a story about a little dragon who goes on a long journey and finally finds friends at the end, but for slightly older readers it will have more important connotations. The little dragon lives in a country inhabited by other dragons, and many of them are not friendly. He no longer feels safe, and so he takes his red suitcase, with nothing in it, and goes forth bravely to find a better place. It is quite a journey and includes dangers and mountains and sea shores and the sea itself, which he crosses by using only his suitcase to float on. There is sometimes humour as well, and friendly birds along the way help him when things go wrong. But even when he gets to the longed-for safe place, not everyone is welcoming. This makes him sad, but when one dragon comes along and shares his chocolate, he begins to feel accepted. This moving story uses excellent illustrations to make the allegorical point about the needs of refugees, and the often horrendous plight they find themselves in. Children need to understand this, and this book will explain subtly and positively how they should respond to those who appear in their peer groups after life-defining experiences. In other words, share the chocolate!
