Ask First, Monkey ISBN: 9781787754102
Published by Jessica Kingsley, 2020
The subtitle of this book is: ‘a playful introduction to consent and boundaries’ and so it is. Monkey is ‘tickletastic’ the best tickler in the world, or so his mum says. The problem is that some of his friends don’t want to be tickled, or only tickled when they feel like it. This is hard for Monkey to understand. Surely everyone wants to laugh, and there’s no better way than being tickled. He can do all sorts of different kinds of tickles, but Sheep finally says No! He doesn’t want to be tickled ‘Ever’. Soon the others are joining in. Lion Cub doesn’t like surprise tickles, and Frog is afraid that if he had told Monkey he didn’t want tickling, Monkey is much bigger and might have been cross. Monkey is upset and apologetic, but how is he to find out if his friends want to be tickled? He comes up with the answer himself to ask first. This is a fun way of introducing quite young children to the concept of boundaries and consent in their lives, and the lively pictures of animals will appeal too. Monkey gives the biggest hugs in the world as well, and he has learned to ask his friends if they would like to experience such. Some want to and others not. The idea of people not wanting someone to hug or tickle them is a new one to youngsters, and this book will be a good start to learning about how to handle relationships.
